This ones for Morydd

Today on #wordpress my buddy Morydd (pronounced Mo - ry - th) was making some suggestions for novel uses of gravatars which sparked something in my mind.

I am a fan of heatmaps, but could never get excited about having one here.  I don't care how many posts I have in each of my categories or any of that jazz.  Now what I am interested in is commenters and the amount of commenting that is going on here at Sillyness.

This lead me to create Commenter Heat Map.  You can see it in action over at this page.  Now as the page says this is a work in progress and not ready to be released into the wild, but I am hoping to have it ready for anyone who wants it by the end of the week, along with my commenter coloring plugin.

So you know the drill, check it out and leave me some feedback.

Very cool Chris. I think you have come up with more uses for gravatars than anyone.

    Michael,

    Kick-ass :)
Short and to the point, I like it!

    Shawn,

I think I just get bored faster than anyone else...

    Hehe, well put Chris.

I'm still waiting for you to release that recent commentors plugin you are using as well. I have some ideas for it, but I'm not sure it is possible in the stage that it is in.

Yeah, see the recent commenters plugin is crafted with multiple default images in mind, it makes it difficult to release. I have not had the time to go through and rewrite the bits I need to for it to work for everyone else.

    Soon my friend, soon.

Neat stuff, but the standard non-gravatar is kinda omnipresent. But heck, it's really cool. Maybe add a title attribute telling you how many comments were made by said person?

    Rob,

Neat stuff, but the standard non-gravatar is kinda omnipresent.

That just means that more people need to get a gravatar!

Also I am working on getting my random generator working with this plugin which will help.

Cool! But I know you're really just trying to get higher on the 'popular sites' page at gravatar.com!

If you wanted to weed out the people without gravatars, you can test the returned image size to see if it's 1x1 pixels.

Nice use for Gravatars, but yes, maybe it'd be better to take off people without Gravatars...

Anyway, can't wait to pop it into my Archives Page. :D

    Yeah, yeah.

That is an interesting idea though Tom. Just need to find out how to integrate it into what I have already done...

Really really nice job. You're definitely one site with some of the coolest uses of Gravatar of the internet.

    Oooh! This is really great.
Weighted tags + Gravatars + comments = helluva lot of fun to watch. :)

You should put your pic and the one who posts the most comments on top of all.

Awesome... Awesome implementation of gravatars! Haha. I need to learn PHP, and all the other good stuff.

Since it was written for me, I suppose I should comment (if for no other reason to get a bigger Gravitar, and maybe... someday... my very own colored box. How cool would that be.
If I got comments on my site, I think I'd want to use this. Maybe someday.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love the cycle of "oooh... I have an idea" to "Hey Look, my idea exists in real-life" and how fast it is. This is at least the second time I've posed a what-if in #wordpress and had the code up and running somewhere in less than a day.

I like the heatmap plugin, but something funny has happened. At first, when I'd mouseover the gravatars, it would show me a count of how many comments each person had left.

    Now it doesn't.

I don't know if I installed some other plugin that made it stop working, but can you spell out (using small, simple words) what I should do to make it work like that again?

I appreciate any help, cuz obviously I need all the help I can get.

(Oh, and BTW, the preview and submit button didn't show up for me until I opened the page in Firefox.)
