Well I guess it is now okay to talk about this little endeavour since khaled has seen fit to announce it and all.
Wow, talk about a "dream team" Michael and khaled are both fine designers and I think between Joshua and I we can handle anything code-foo wise that should rear its ugly head.
Hmmmm... I think we should call ourselves the A Team... cause you know they had a smokin van.
So gentle readers, taking a cue from khaled, what are you looking for in a new, shiny improved backend for WordPress? What we will be creating is a top -to-bottom conversion of the admin area. New UI and layout as well as new functions I would imagine. I have some ideas for some productivity functions that I am going to be hacking on, and I know that Michael and khaled will have some technical hurdles for Joshua and I to jump through as well. Should be fun.
So leave your gripes/complaints/wishes for a new UI in the comments here so we can start to get a picture of what we are dealing with.

I suppose that the only design change is to "beautify" it a bunch (CSS please)... But if you were going to add some more functions, maybe you could hack up a much better upload script, maybe one that lets you choose a folder (as long as its CHMOD'ed correctly) and/or create ones in a already created folder. Also on the post screen have a media table in which you can browse through folders on your website, and look for media (like pics or movies) with which you can drag into your post creating a link (or if a pic then showing it (maybe being able to specify a size, and if a pic is below that size then it goes direct into the post, and if its above that size then maybe it links))... Also put a mass delete of comments by specification plugin by default...
Well thats my 2 cents.

I would love to see the ability to "theme" the backend. I don't know if doing "admin themes" would be totally nuts, but I think it would be worth coding the new backend with plenty of css hooks, and then offering a way to choose between different admin css files - simple and clean admin themes!

The thing about changing the backend to CSS is that some people post to their sites from mobile devices that CSS can play havoc with. I personally post from my Sidekick from time to time, and I have friends that post from their pocket PCs, and creating a nicely positioned CSS interface will leave half of it off of our screens.
It's all well and good to push up-to-date standards and design in the front end to your site, but you have to remember that the backend is a utility, and you want utilities to have the most compatibility across the board.
The things that I'd like to see are more interfaces like the new dashboard in 1.5... contextually bringing relevant things together in sidebars within each menu screen would greatly facilitate jumping around the backend quickly.

I don't see why it wouldn't be BETTER to have customized css for the backed in terms of usability on portable devices. You could make a css admin theme just for that - with all the but the basics hidden etc...

That I did Craig, that I did. I am still trying to get all of this up and running again, sometime soon hopefully.

Chris,
Was going to send you an email about this, but on your contact page, the contact form is currently showing only as a php_include :). Well, you did say that a few things were "borken"!

sounds a bit overly simplistic but i'd like it to look like a designer did it.
clean, simple, tasteful, and minimal... kinda like...here.

most useful feature (if you're really planning to add features) would be tools for building photo galleries. i know there are a bunch of things out there, but none work that well and all have funky ways of doing things.
generally, i like the wordpress model. it's simple and functional as it is (imho). perhaps the right way to do it is to add the ability to specify a particular layout for use with a particular category. i could then design a "gallery" layout (say 3 x 3 thumbnails with a different method of navigating) and assign it to my "gallery" category.
the last thing would be to implement a simple way to upload multiple images and manage them on the server. of course there's ftp, but that's not always an option.
anyway, those are my thoughts. i love wp, and i'm sure the future is in good hands.

I tried downloading a nightly build, and I love the "pages" but it would be nice to be able to add wordpress template tags to the pages. In case people wanted to have blog stats or something appear in the page. Also, it would be nice if there was an easy way to bypass the newer themes, or to upgrade old themes. A tutorial would be ok, so people wouldn't have to completely rework their styles. Also, it would be nice to know what template tags to use for some plugins, or that they needed to be PHP-included.
