If you haven’t yet noticed, there is a new version of the Flickr website.

There are some things that I think are a step down visually, like removing the box around individual images, but for the most part I am impressed with the changes that have been made.

My favorite change so far has been the new ‘Organizer’ which is now completely powered by AJAXy goodness.   No more flash… feels good.

If you post about this on Twitter, please use the hashtag #silly583.

Oh, you’re right, it’s all AJAX, I didn’t even notice.

The new Flickr is great, some things are ‘so-so’ but most of the changes are nothing but forward movement; and that’s what we like to see.

AJAX is tasty.

Chris, why good if there’s no more Flash? It seems more and more professional designers and developers starting to “dislike” flash. For what reason?

I like it because the changes are subtile. It will be interesting to see AJAX in a few years when things are movig along a lot more smoothly. Right now, I think we are still trying to define where to use it, and where it is overkill.
Thanks for pointing it out!

Especially since JavaScript has a _far, far_ lower penetration than Flash (around 88 vs 97) - and Flash’s is set to increase a wee bit as it’ll be bundled with the Acrobat plugin.

Integration-into-site wise, sure, “ajax” can be better, but how many people are going to be cut off? (Opera users it seems…)

Also, the new menu system (especially the fact you have to click the menu instead of hover) is horrid - but that’s just me probably.

Yeah, it looks really sweet now - and it seems more efficient the the flash applet in my opinion. Most of the arguments for and against are just opiniated anyway, but i’m sure that their decision was properly discussed.
